Pingyao Ancient City (平遥古城) is a walled ancient city located in Pingyao County, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province, China.

It was built in the period of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty (827 BC-782 BC), and earthen ramparts were built around the place. The ancient city was remodeled and expanded in the third year of Hongwu Emperor in the Ming Dynasty (1370).

Pingyao Ancient City is an outstanding example of a city of the Han nationality in China during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) dynasties.

It shows the evolution of Chinese architectural styles and urban planning over the past five centuries and is known as a living sample for studying ancient Chinese cities. It has rich and unique value in architecture, religion, trade, folklore and folk art.

On December 3, 1997, the ancient city of Pingyao, together with the surrounding Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple, were identified as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO and included in the ” World Heritage List “. On July 20, 2015, Pingyao Ancient City was approved as a national AAAAA tourist attraction.
