Walk through Jing’an Temple Shopping District, Shanghai

Jing’an Temple (静安寺) is a historic Buddhist temple complex located in Jing’an District, Shanghai. In front of the temple to the south is the busy Nanjing West Road, and behind the temple to the north is Yuyuan Road, adjacent to Huashan Road.

The Jing’an Temple shopping district is the place in Shanghai, with some of the city’s most fashionable commercial shopping centers and upscale office buildings.

Brief history of the temple:

The original temple was first built in 247 AD in the Wu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period of ancient China.

The site of the temple was located on the north bank of Wusong River (now Suzhou Creek).

In the ninth year of Jiading in the Southern Song Dynasty (1216), because the site of the temple was close to the riverbank and the foundation of the temple was in danger of collapsing, the abbot Zhongyi moved the temple to where the temple is now.

Since the early Qing Dynasty, Jing’an Temple has been destroyed and revived many times.
