Walk in Shanghai – Longhua Temple & Longhuahui Mall
Longhua Temple (龙华寺; alternative name Longhwa Temple; literally meaning “Dragon Flower Temple”) is a Buddhist temple dedicated to Maitreya Buddha located in Xuhui District, Shanghai.
The name of Longhua Temple comes from the allusion in Buddhist scriptures about Maitreya Bodhisattva becoming a Buddha under the Longhua tree.
It is the largest ancient temple complex in Shanghai. Although most of the present day buildings date from later reconstructions, the temple preserves the architectural design of a Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) monastery of the Chan School.
It is said that Longhua Temple was built by Sun Quan for his mother during the Three Kingdoms period (220 – 280 AD). However, there are documented records that Longhua Temple was built in the Northern Song Dynasty.
In 1959, Longhua Temple was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Shanghai.
One street away from the Shanghai Longhua Temple is the Longhuahui (龙华会), a modern large-scale shopping mall that integrates shopping, entertainment and dining.
Inside the mall, there are a variety of goods and services to satisfy people’s needs. One of the highlights is the installation of lotuses in the center of the mall, which is more than ten meters high.
