Walk in Hunyuan County, China – Sacred Sites

Hunyuan County (浑源县) is a county under the administration of Datong City, in the northeast of Shanxi Province, China.

We start our walk near Yong’an Temple in Hongyuan County town. Then we pass by this temple and head towards Yuanjue Temple.

Yong’an Temple (永安寺), commonly known as the Great Temple, is a Buddhist temple located in Hunyuan County at the northern foot of Hengshan Mountain (恒山), Shanxi Province, China.

The temple was first built in the Jin Dynasty and was later destroyed by fire but was rebuilt in the Yuan Dynasty. There are murals in 1315 AD. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Yong’an Temple was repaired repeatedly.

June 25, 2001, Yong’an Temple was announced by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China as fifth batch of key national sites to be protected.

Yuanjue Temple (圆觉寺) is located in Hunyuan County at the northern foot of Hengshan Mountain (恒山), Shanxi Province, China. Yuanjue Temple Pagoda (圆觉寺砖塔; Yuanjue Temple Brick Pagoda) was built in the Jin Dynasty and has stood on the grounds of Yuanjue Temple for over 800 years.

On May 13, 2022, the Shanxi Provincial People’s Government announced the protection plan for 26 national key cultural relics protection units including the Yuanjue Temple Pagoda.
