Hike in the Vicinity of Shining Rock – NC, US

Shining Rock is a mountain in western North Carolina. The mountain is one of the Great Balsam Mountains which are a part of the Blue Ridge Mountains within the Appalachian Mountains. It is the 38th tallest mountain in the eastern United States.

Shining Rock is in “the Shining Rock Wilderness”. It is an area of wilderness with forests, mountain peaks, and various hiking trails. The Art Loeb Trail passes just below the summit.

Shining Rock is named for the large white quartzite rock outcropping near its summit.

When I finally did get some free time, I decided to give this trip I was looking forward to a shot. Although parts would be challenging, I felt up to the task. But sometimes months of meticulous research and careful planning aren’t enough. Sometimes a back-up plan isn’t enough either…
