Chengdu City Life

Chengdu (成都), alternatively romanized as Chengtu, is a sub-provincial city which serves as the capital of the Chinese province of Sichuan.

It is the fourth most populous city in China, and it is the only city apart from the four direct-administered municipalities with a population of over 20 million. It is traditionally the hub of Western China.

Archaeological discoveries at the Sanxingdui and Jinsha Site have established that the area surrounding Chengdu was inhabited over four thousand years ago, in 18–10th century BC.

An article by the Los Angeles Times (2006) called Chengdu “China’s party city” for its carefree lifestyle.

Chengdu has more tea houses and bars than Shanghai despite having less than half the population. Chengdu’s tea culture dates back over a thousand years, including its time as the starting point of the Southern Silk Road.

Common side dishes popular in Chengdu include noodles, wontons, dumplings, pastries, tangyuan (sweet rice balls), drinks, salads and soups.

Chengdu is an officially recognised UNESCO City of Gastronomy.
