Walking in Shanghai – Xinchang Ancient Town

Xinchang Ancient Town is located in Pudong New District, about 36 kilometers away from downtown Shanghai, 20 kilometers away from Pudong International Airport, and only an 8-minute drive from Disneyland.

The Xinchang town was built in the second year of Jianyan in the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1128), and has a history of more than 800 years. The name originated from the southward migration of the Xiasha Saltworks to form a new saltworks, hence the name “Xinchang” in the early years of the Yuan Dynasty. That is to say, the Songjiang branch of the Salt Transportation Department of Zhejiang and Zhejiang Province moved here. It is an ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River that was formed by salt and thrived by salt.

Now there are more and more tourists visiting the ancient town, especially during the holidays. The hustle and bustle is only in the northern part of the ancient town, and the southern part of the ancient town is quiet. The ancient town of Xinchang preserves 150,000 square meters of ancient buildings, 1,200 meters of stone revetments from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, and 69 ancient ritual gates. The ancient town of Xinchang is also called “Little Suzhou”. Let’s take a virtual tour of the ancient town of Xinchang.
