Walk to Yungang Grottoes – Datong, Shanxi, China

Yungang Grottoes (云冈石窟), formerly the Wuzhoushan Grottoes (武州山 / 武周山), are ancient Chinese Buddhist temple grottoes built during the Northern Wei dynasty near the city of Datong, then called Pingcheng, in the province of Shanxi.

Northern Wei Dynasty rulers advocate Buddhism and they built temples, big open grottoes.. The main part of this cave complex was completed before the Northern Wei Dynasty moved its capital to Luoyang. This is from about 460 to 494 AD.

Yungang Grottoes are located at the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain. Wuzhou mountain highest place called Yungang, so the name Yungang Grottoes.

In 2001, the Yungang Grottoes were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
