Walk in Nanchang – Wanshou Temple
Wanshou Temple (Longevity Palace, 万寿宫) is a famous Taoist temple with a long history located in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, China.
The temple was first built in the sixth year of Yongjia (312) of the Jin Dynasty in memory of Xu Jingyang Zhenjun and was named “Jingyang Ancient Temple”.
During the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Yizong of the Tang Dynasty (Eign: September 13, 859 – August 15, 873) named it “Iron Pillar Temple” because he heard that Xu Zhenjun had used iron pillars to suppress demons.
In the second year of Tianshun (1458), Jiangxi believers donated more than 10,000 kilograms of copper to cast a statue of Xu Zhenjun for the temple.
In the sixth year of Zhengde (1511), Emperor Wuzong of the Ming Dynasty granted gold to repair the palace.
Over its long history, the temple changed its name, was destroyed, restored and reconstructed.
The architectural style of Wanshou Temple is elegant and exquisite, rich in national characteristics. It enshrines many Taoist deities, such as the Three Pristine Ones, the Jade Emperor, and the Emperor of Guan Di, and attracts a large number of worshippers and tourists every year to pray for blessings.
During the Spring Festival, the temple is a bustling place where temple fairs, dragon and lion dances, and folkloric performances are staged, adding to the festive and peaceful atmosphere of the new year.
