Huayan Temple or Huayan Monastery (华严寺) is a Buddhist temple located in Datong Ancient City (大同古城) of Datong City, Shanxi Province, China.

The temple was first established in 1038, in the 7th year of Chongxi period (1032-1055), reign period of Emperor Xingzong of Liao dynasty (907-1125). It’s burned out a few times, but it’s been rebuilt.

The name of “Huayan” derives from Avatamsaka Sutra, which more commonly known as “Huayan Sutra” (华严经) in China.

Huayan Temple was historically divided into the upper and lower temple two independent temples, is now a united temple. The architecture of the temple’s location was built with the sun worship in mind.

After the founding of the Communist State, the government provided great protection for the temple.

Huayan Temple was inscribed in the first group of “Major National Historical and Cultural Sites in Shanxi” by the State Council of China in 1961.
