Walk in Antalya – Kaleiçi and Modern City

Antalya is the fifth-most populous city in Turkey as well as the capital of Antalya Province. It is seen as the “capital of tourism” in Turkey.

Antalya known for its harbor, beaches, and is its airport often the first stop for tourists arriving for their vacation in nearby towns.

The old city of Antalya, called Kaleiçi, is characterized by narrow streets and the historic Hadrian’s Gate.

On this evening we start in the south at Kaleiçi. We walk through the touristic center of the old town and north towards the modern city center before we return to the old town to finish our tour.

Early history of the city:

The city that is now Antalya was first settled around 200 BC by the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon. King Attalus II of Pergamon is looked on as founder of the city. It was named Attaleia or Attalia (Ancient Greek: Ἀττάλεια) in his honour.

The city was soon conquered by the Romans. Roman rule saw Antalya thrive, including the construction of several new monuments, such as Hadrian’s Gate, and the proliferation of neighboring cities.
