Shanghai Ferry on the Huangpu River in Shanghai

The Huangpu River flows in Shanghai between Pudong and Puxi.

Puxi (浦西, lit “Huangpu West Bank”) is the historic center of the city. Despite the growing importance of Pudong’s Lujiazui area, Puxi remains Shanghai’s cultural, residential and commercial center. It consists of a number of districts including Yangpu, Hongkou, Putuo, Changning, Xuhui, Jing’an and Huangpu.

Pudong is a district (Pudong New District) of Shanghai located east of the Huangpu River, which flows through the central part of the city.

Before the 1970s, the ferry was the only way to travel between the two sides of the Huangpu River. In the 1980s, it became one of the busiest ferry routes in the world.

In the 1990s, with the development of Pudong New District and the construction of the Huangpu River Bridge in the urban section, the passenger transport pressure on the city ferry was greatly relieved.

The Shanghai Ferry (上海轮渡) gradually became one of the best tools for enjoying the scenery on both sides of the River in Shanghai.
