Hunyuan County Walk – Yong’an Temple, Hunyuan Temple of Literature

Hunyuan County (浑源县) is a county under the administration of Datong City, in the northeast of Shanxi Province, China.

Yong’an Temple (永安寺), commonly known as the Great Temple, is a Buddhist temple located in Hunyuan County at the northern foot of Hengshan Mountain (恒山).

The temple is not far from Yuanjue Temple (圆觉寺) with Yuanjue Temple Pagoda (圆觉寺砖塔; Yuanjue Temple Brick Pagoda, also known as Yuanjiao Sizhuanta).

The temple was first built in the Jin Dynasty and was later destroyed by fire but was rebuilt in the Yuan Dynasty. There are murals in 1315 AD. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Yong’an Temple was repaired repeatedly.

Hunyuan Confucian Temple (浑源文庙; Hunyuan Temple of Literature) is also not far from Yuanjue Temple (圆觉寺) with Yuanjue Temple Pagoda (圆觉寺砖塔; Yuanjue Temple Brick Pagoda, also known as Yuanjiao Sizhuanta). North of Yong’an West Street (永安西街).

The temple was built during the Liao Dynasty (916-1125), and has been repaired in successive generations. The area of the temple is 17,400 square meters.
