Yellow-browed Bunting on a Branch
The yellow-browed bunting is a passerine
bird in the bunting family Emberizidae, a group now separated by most modern taxonomists from the finches.
The genus name Emberiza is from Old German Embritz, a bunting. The specific chrysophrys is from Ancient Greek khrusophrus, “golden-browed”.
Feature:
Body length 16 cm. Iris dark brown. Mouth pinkish brown, upper mouth and tip black brown. Feet pink.
Male breeding plumage, black on forehead, top of head, occiput, and head side, with white head center line and cheek lines; bright yellow in front of eyebrow line, white in back; ear feathers dark brown, with white spots behind ears; back is generally brown, With chestnut-brown fine longitudinal stripes; forehead line black, with dark brown longitudinal stripes in white on thoracic side and two flanks; white central ventral and undertail coverts, the latter basal segment black.
Male non-breeding feathers, forehead, top of head, occiput, and head side are dark brown; ear feathers are brown, the lower edge is nearly black, and there are white spots on the back of the neck.
The female bird resembles the male bird, but with lighter plumage. The head is dark brown, the ear feathers are brown, and the outer edge is dark brown.
Distributed:
China, Russia, Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Laos, etc.; occasionally seen in Taiwan. It is a very rare wanderer to western Europe.
