Walk in Shanghai – Kunming Road
Coming out of Dalian Road underground station and heading in the direction of Kunming Road, I decided to walk along Kunming Road, a road I was visiting for the first time.
As the underground was already in the middle of Kunming Road, I chose to walk south and didn’t have to walk long before I saw the high walls and barbed wire fence, which was Tilanqiao Prison, I think.
Once surrounded by farmland, Tilanqiao Prison is now located in the prime location of Shanghai’s North Bund. In the 1930s Tiranqiao Prison was the largest prison in the Far East, with a capacity of 8,000 inmates at any one time, and so many rooms that a prisoner could not live in all of them for a period of 10 years.
Today we walk along Kunming Road, just a wall away from the prison, and look back on history with a long sigh.
