Walk in Shanghai – Jing’an Temple Shopping District

Jing’an Temple (静安寺), also known as Jing’an Ancient Temple, is located in Jing’an District, Shanghai. It is one of the four major Buddhist temples in Shanghai.

The Jing’an Temple shopping district is the place in Shanghai, with some of the city’s most fashionable commercial shopping centers and upscale office buildings.

The temple is said that its history can be traced back to the 10th year of Wu Chiwu (247) during the Three Kingdoms era. It was originally named Hudu Chongyuan Temple and was located on the north bank of the Wusong River (now Suzhou River).

During the Tang Dynasty, it was renamed Yongtai Zen Temple. In the first year of Dazhong Xiangfu (1008), Emperor Taizong of the Northern Song Dynasty, it was renamed Jing’an Temple.

In the ninth year of Jiading in the Southern Song Dynasty (1216), Abbot Zhongyi moved the temple to its current location because the foundation of the original temple was washed away by the river and was unstable.
