Views of the City of Batumi, Georgia
Batumi (ბათუმი) is the second-largest city of Georgia after Tbilisi and the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, located on the coast of the Black Sea in Georgia’s southwest.
The city is situated in a subtropical zone at the foot of the Caucasus and is a popular tourist destination.
Since 2010, Batumi has been transformed by the construction of modern high-rise buildings, as well as the restoration of classical 19th-century edifices lining its historic Old Town.
Batumi is located on the site of the ancient Greek colony in Colchis called “Bathus” or “Bathys”, derived from (Greek: βαθύς λιμεν, or βαθύς λιμήν, lit. the ‘deep harbour’).
Batumi is the place where the hero Jason and his crew of Argonauts went in search of the Golden Fleece by order of King Pelias. The Golden Fleece (Greek: Χρυσόμαλλον δέρας) is the golden skin of a ram in Greek mythology. Through the help of Medea, they acquire the Golden Fleece.
The story is of great antiquity and was current in the time of Homer (eighth century BC).
