Isabelline Shrike – Bird Sound
The isabelline shrike or Daurian shrike is a member of the shrike family (Laniidae).
Feature:
Body length 16~18 cm. Iris brown. The beak of adult birds is black, and that of young birds is grayish brown. Feet black.
The male bird is light brown from the base of the beak to the forehead, gray brown from the top of the head to the upper back, and the lower back to the upper tail coverts are stained with rust color.
It’s dark across the lash line, but becomes lighter in the eyes first. The chin and throat are milky white, the chest, flanks and abdomen are light brown, mixed with light brown, and the lower tail coverts are milky yellow.
The female bird is like the male bird, but the eyeliner is brown, and the eyes are brown mixed with light yellow or black. Fine brown scales are vaguely visible on the side of the neck and chest, and the chest and flanks are stained yellow.
The upper body plumage of the young bird is similar to that of a male bird, but it has brown scales. The tail feathers are dark brown with light grayish white at the end.
The upper tail feathers are brown with slightly black horizontal stripes. The eyes are brown in front and across the eyeline, and the chest is pinkish brown. Form a horizontal stripe chest band.
Distributed:
Europe, central, southern, western Asia and African desert and semi-desert areas.
There was a record in Kinmen in October 2018. The Zezhi Desert Shrike appeared in Jiangjun District, Tainan City on December 25, 2023. This is the first record on the main island of Taiwan.
