TAIWANESE BREAKFAST in TAIPEI and Trip to SHIFEN WATERFALL

Where to eat Taiwanese breakfast in Taipei. How to get to Shifen from Taipei. Where to eat in Shifen. How to get to Shifen Waterfall from Taipei.

BREAKFAST STOP:

Fu Hang Dou Jiang (Fu Hang Soy Milk) No. 108, Section 1, Zhongxiao East Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100.

Fu Hang Dou Jiang was the first stop of the day for a traditional Taiwanese breakfast. There is usually a long line here, but we walked right in since it was late morning just before close. It is located upstairs on the second floor. We ordered two bowls of salty soy milk, one you tiao, one cold rice milk and one sesame flat bread with egg. We really enjoyed our breakfast and were nice and full for the journey ahead.

HOW TO GET TO SHIFEN from TAIPEI:

From Taipei Station, take one of the trains to Ruifang Station. From Ruifang, transfer to the train to Shifen. The specific train number will vary depending on what time you leave Taipei.

Since the Shifen connection is a separate train, it was easier for us to buy the tickets for both trains from the counter instead of the machines. Give the person at the counter the time of the train from Google Maps. For example, the 5:30 to Ruifang and 6:30 to Shifen. The ride will take about an hour and fifteen minutes.

SHIFEN OLD STREET:

This is a heavily touristed street that runs along the train tracks. We followed our noses to a delicious aroma an found a stall selling chicken wings. They were grilled, topped with a lightly sweet bbq sauce, spice blend, sesame seeds and dried seaweed. Inside, they were filled with fried rice. Absolutely delicious and regret not buying a few more!

Here, a popular activity is to write a message or wish on a plastic lantern, which is then lit up and sent up into the sky. It may be a fun activity for many, but the smell of burnt plastic is terrible and it leads to lots of waste and garbage around the town.

SHIFEN WATERFALLS:

Walk down the old street along the train tracks and follow the sign to Shifen Waterfall Park. It is about a 25 minute walk from the train station. But, it will likely be longer while exploring and taking in the sights of Shifen along the way.

The falls are well worth the walk and the two suspension bridges are quite nice too.
