Walk in Zhenjiang City – Jiangsu, China
Zhenjiang City (镇江市), alternately romanized as Chinkiang, is a city located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province, East China.
To the north, it borders the city of Yangzhou, located on the other side of the river.
Zhenjiang is a national historical and cultural city, and an important port, tourist and livable city.
Zhenjiang has always been a strategic military location, controlling the north-south routes, with its beautiful mountains and rivers, and has been a place of great talent. Throughout history, many literati and poets have come here, leaving behind timeless masterpieces.
Zhenjiang has produced renowned figures such as Liu Yu (Jin’nu), Xiao Tong, Shen Kuo, Mi Fu, Zong Ze, Liu Xie, Ge Hong, and Mao Yisheng.
Jinshan Temple (金山寺) is a Buddhist temple located at the top of Jinshan Hill (金山) in Runzhou District of Zhenjiang.
The temple was first established by Emperor Ming of Jin between 323 and 325, in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317–420).
The entire complex faces the west and has an exquisite layout in the order of the Shanmen, Four Heavenly Kings Hall, Mahavira Hall, Hall of Guru, Furong Tower, Qifeng Pavilion, and Cishou Pagoda.
This ancient temple, with towering pagodas, is famous for its connection to the legendary tale of the White Snake (白蛇传), a romantic folktale deeply rooted in Chinese culture.
Nearby, Beigu Mountain (北固山) rises above the Yangtze, offering breathtaking views and historical sites such as Ganlu Temple (甘露寺), a place famously associated with the Three Kingdoms period (三国). Standing at the summit, one can feel the echoes of history blending with the natural grandeur of the landscape.
Jiaoshan (焦山), an island in the middle of the Yangtze River, adds to Zhenjiang’s allure. Home to Dinghui Temple (定慧寺), a Buddhist monastery dating back over a thousand years, and the renowned Jiaoshan Stele Forest (焦山碑林), which holds centuries-old inscriptions, the island serves as a peaceful retreat where nature and history intertwine.
The gentle waves surrounding Jiaoshan create an almost dreamlike atmosphere, making it a perfect escape from the city’s bustling streets.
A walk through Xijin Ferry (西津渡), the city’s ancient riverside street, reveals another layer of Zhenjiang’s charm.
Once a vital trading hub along the Grand Canal (京杭大运河), this well-preserved historical district features cobblestone alleys, traditional teahouses, and centuries-old architecture. As the lanterns light up in the evening, the old town takes on a magical glow, transporting visitors back in time.
