Kaifeng City (开封市) is a historic city located in Henan Province, China, is one of the Eight Ancient Capitals of China. It has more than 4,100 years of history of city.
Kaifeng is a famous city in the country and abroad in the field of culture and tourism. Henan Opera, the largest local opera in China, originated from this. The Qingming Cultural Festival of Kaifeng and the Kaifeng Chrysanthemum Cultural Festival of China attract many tourists.
A prominent landmark is the Iron Pagoda (铁塔), constructed in 1049 during the Song Dynasty.
Standing at 55 meters, this octagonal structure is adorned with over a thousand intricately detailed glazed tiles, giving it the appearance of iron. Remarkably, it has withstood wars and floods, remaining the oldest landmark in Kaifeng.
Another significant site is the Dragon Pavilion (龙亭), which showcases traditional Chinese architecture and offers insights into the city’s imperial history.
Additionally, the Millennium City Park (清明上河园) recreates scenes from the famous painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival,” providing visitors with a glimpse into ancient urban life.
Kaifeng’s historical significance is further highlighted by its role as a major commercial and industrial center during the 11th century, situated at the intersection of four major canals.
During this period, the city was surrounded by three rings of city walls and had a population estimated between 600,000 and 700,000, making it one of the largest cities globally at the time.
Today, Kaifeng continues to be a city where history and modernity coexist.
