Walk in Jinxi Ancient Town – Kunshan, Jiangsu, China
Jinxi Ancient Town (锦溪古镇) is located in the southwest of Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, China. Kunshan is a county-level city with its eastern border bordered by Shanghai and its western bordered by Suzhou (苏州市).
Jinxi is an ancient town with a history of more than 2,000 years, known as “The Town of Chinese Folk Museums”, with many cultural landscapes, monuments and numerous unique Ming and Qing buildings.
As early as 5,500 years ago, during the Songze culture, Jinxi had its first people. The Songze Culture was a Neolithic culture that existed between 3800 and 3300 BCE in the Lake Tai area near Shanghai.
During the Spring and Autumn Period of Wu and Yue, Jinxi became a market town and belonged to Huijie County.
From the Three Kingdoms to the Tang Dynasty, the area belonged to Wu County, and in the Fifth Dynasty, it belonged to Suzhou.
The ancient town of Jinxi is covered with lakes and lanes. There are Wubao Lake and Dianshan Lake in the south and Chen Lake in the northwest. The river channel in the ancient town is 6 kilometers long, forming a typical Jiangnan water town style.
The river and lake in Jinxi connected to each other, the streets and alleys follow the water, and the bridges and alleys are connected.
Jinxi ancient town tourism began in 1995.
In 2005, Jinxi Ancient Town was rated as a national 4A-level tourist attraction.
In 2008, Jinxi Ancient Town has been honored as “Famous Chinese Historical and Cultural Town” by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of the People’s Republic of China.
