Shaanxi History Museum Collection in Xi’An, China
Shaanxi History Museum (陕西历史博物馆) is China’s first large-scale modernized national museum, located in Yanta District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province, northwest of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔).
Its construction began in 1983, the location of the new museum was determined, and the preparatory work began officially. It was opened on June 20, 1991.
The museum building was designed by Ms. Zhang Jinqiu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Its appearance recalls the architectural style of the Tang dynasty. This elegant and majestic building, with a combination of traditional architecture and modern technology.
The museum is in an area of 65,000 square metres (700,000 sq ft), with a building area of 55,600 square metres (598,000 sq ft), cultural relics storerooms of 8,000 square metres (86,000 sq ft), exhibition halls of 11,000 square meters, and a collection of 370,000 objects from the time of ancient man to 1840.
The Shaanxi History Museum was formerly the Shaanxi Provincial Museum, which is now the Xi’an Beilin Museum (西安碑林博物馆), and some people call it the “New Museum” for this reason. It was rated as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
