Driving on the S21 Altay-Urumqi Expressway – Xinjiang, China
In this video we will drive along a super highway that was only opened to traffic in recent years, the S21 Altay-Urumqi Expressway (Awu) located in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in Northwestern China.
This is the first desert expressway in Xinjiang. Its completion has opened a convenient passage between northern Xinjiang and Urumqi, increased the connection between Urumqi and Altay regions, and become another choice for Urumqi residents in the “three-hour tourist business district”.
The route starts from Beitun City of the 10th Division of the Corps, passes through Beitun City, Fuhai County, Wujiaqu City, Changji Prefecture, and Urumqi City, and ends at the West Ring Expressway in Urumqi City.
The route is 342.538 kilometers long and has a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour. Among them, the section from Altay (Beitun) to Wujiaqu adopts the standard of a two-way four-lane expressway, and the section from Wujiaqu to Urumqi adopts the standard of a two-way six-lane expressway.
