Shaoxing (绍兴市) is a prefecture-level city on the southern shore of Hangzhou Bay in east China’s Zhejiang Province.
It has a history of about 9,000 years since the Xiaohuangshan Culture of the Neolithic Age. The ancient capital of Yue, a state in ancient China was built in 490 BC, with a history of more than 2,500 years.
Shaoxing City is a famous city on water, a city of bridges, a city of wine, a city of calligraphy and a city of celebrities. Notable residents of Shaoxing include Wang Xizhi, the parents of Zhou Enlai, Lu Xun, and Cai Yuanpei.
One of the must-visit sites is Anchang Ancient Town (安昌古鎮), a well-preserved water town that showcases traditional architecture and local customs. Walking through its narrow streets, you will encounter historic buildings and bridges that tell stories of a bygone era.
Warehouse Bridge Street (倉橋直街) is another highlight, famous for its ancient bridges and bustling markets. It’s an ideal place to experience the local lifestyle and perhaps pick up some traditional handicrafts.
The Shaoxing Historical Quarter (書聖故里) pays homage to Wang Xizhi, a legendary calligrapher. Here, you can explore museums and galleries dedicated to the art of Chinese calligraphy.
Don’t miss the Eight Bridge (八字橋), an architectural marvel named for its unique shape resembling the Chinese character for “eight.” It’s a perfect spot for photography, especially when the surrounding canals are illuminated at dusk.
