Mandrills in Denver Zoo – Colorado, US

Our lovely mandrill duo celebrated their 12th and 14th birthdays! Did you know that Jelani and Kumani, parents to Kesi and baby Akili, were born just two years and a day apart?

To celebrate their special days, keepers treated the whole family to lots of birthday-themed enrichment which was not only fun, but helped encourage natural behaviors like foraging.

Happy Belated Birthday, Jelani and Kumani!

The mandrill is a primate of the Old World monkey family. It is one of two species in the genus Mandrillus, along with the drill. Although they superficially resemble baboons, they are more closely related to mangabeys of the genus Cercocebus.
