Kyoto (京都, officially Kyoto City (京都市), is the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture in the Kansai region of Japan’s largest and most populous island of Honshu.

Kyoto was the capital of Japan from 794 to 1868, until the transfer of the imperial court to Tokyo in 1869.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) includes fourteen temples, shrines, and castles in Kyoto dating from between the sixth century and the seventeenth century.
